Born & raised in Detroit, MI, Jumaane N’Namdi was intimately exposed to visual art as a child. Consequently, he developed an appreciation for the creative process and the cultural relevance of fine art. Jumaane has been involved with the G.R. N’Namdi gallery since age 13, when he first assisted his father in hanging shows and delivering art. During this time, he also developed unique familial relationships with many of the celebrated master artists he represents today. After earning his B.S. degree in psychology from Morehouse College, Jumaane returned to direct the galleries in Chicago, NY and Detroit.

Jumaane’s father George started the G.R. N’Namdi Gallery in 1981 in Detroit, MI., making it the oldest and largest existing African American owned gallery in the world. Molded by his father and mentor, Jumaane consults clients on observing and appreciating art, gives group & private consultations, as well as lectures at various prestigious institutions, such as: the The Metropolitan Museum of NY, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT, among many others. Jumaane sits on the Boards of the Muntu Dance Company & the Friends of La Rabida children’s hospital. He is also personally involved in various artistic endeavors, as producer for independent films featured at both the Sundance Film & American Black Film Festivals.

Combining Jumaane’s social panache with his inherited natural ability to identify talented artists, he is able to successfully enhance the well-built roster of artists that the gallery’s foundation was built upon.Jumaane asserts, “one of the things I am most proud of is that we have been able to retain our core group of more established artists while still being able to seek out and build the careers of promising new young artists as well.”

An international traveler, Jumaane spent time studying in Mexico and has journeyed to Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and the Caribbean. With a demonstrated commitment to giving back, on an annual basis Jumaane sponsors five elementary and high school basketball teams and hosts various charitable fundraisers including: the gallery’s annual Hampton’s Summer Art Series, a month long exhibition in East Hampton, NY, that raises awareness and funds for deserving NYC children’s charities, such as Hoops for Hope, Rush Philanthropic Arts foundation, Little Flower Children & Family Services of NY, among others.

Jumaane possesses an intense love for what he does and an ardent desire to expose the real possibilities there are for collecting works of art by master artists. He insists that, “there is an artistic style or idea that pertains to everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs. Art is everywhere and for everyone.
