Romare Bearden was a painter who became regarded as the paramount collagist in the US in the 1960s. His work depicts scenes of culture and life, containing themes of religion, music, and family. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Romare Bearden had been influenced by art his entire life. After moving to Harlem, Bearden’s father became active in the New York art scene. Bearden studied at the Art Students League in New York City. He majored in mathematics at Columbia University and after military service in World War II, went on to study art history at the Sorbonne in Paris, traveling Europe extensively. In the 1960s Bearden founded both the Cinque Gallery, a gallery devote to helping up-and-coming young artists and the Spiral Group, a group devoted to helping talented artists gain recognition.(1914-1988)
